The Dunbars farm at Richardson, Saskatchewan, and got started showing Shetland and Hackney ponies in the 1960s. Gary and Carole competed at the shows in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Iowa and Minnesota. John Voth helped with the showing and training. Gary also enjoyed showing a Road horse that won many classes. Many of the Dunbar bred ponies, sired by Wheatland Humdinger became great show ponies, Highly Explosive went on the be World Champion Harness Pony. Looking through the pedigrees of the Heartland ponies you will find Wheatland's Humdinger appearing many times. His outstanding motion and desire was passed on to his offspring. Having acheived the goal of developing one of the finest ponies in the breed, Gary and Carole moved away from Hackneys and began a stable of Standardbreds that they raced in Western Canada. This venture also was a success, racing home bred horses in Sires Stake races in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In an interview with Gary about a certain young race horse that was a top stake colt, the record time was discussed, the money made was mentioned, the many races won. To Gary, this was indeed a great achievement, yet his comment was nothing could compare with breeding and showing a world champion hackney.
